60319 1/32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc
The
Supermarine Spitfire was designed by R.J. Mitchell and its distinctive
silhouette makes it one of the most widely-recognized fighters of WWII. Famous
for its exploits during the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire continued to evolve
in accordance with engine technology in order to counter newer Axis aircraft. As
a result of this evolution, numerous variants of the Spitfire were born, and
they served with distinction in the RAF as well as the air forces of many other
countries until well after the end of WWII. The Spitfire Mk.IX was a variant
that was developed to counter the threat of German Fw- 190A fighters, which were
clearly superior than the earlier Spitfire Mk.V. It was equipped with a Merlin
Series 60/70 engine with two-stage supercharger, which enabled greatly improved
performance, allowing it to be a match for the Fw-190A. They were deployed from
the summer of 1942 and finally allowed the RAF to resume daytime offensive
operations over Europe. Production of the Mk.IX continued until the end of the
war, with several different versions produced. Most featured the “C” universal
wing, which could be fitted with either four 20mm cannons or two 20mm cannons
and four 7.7mm machine guns. In addition to its fighter role, many were fitted
with bomb racks to enable it to act as
a tactical fighter-bomber.
